My Weeks In Stitches - A Finish!

Hooray, I finished the Easter sweater!  I'm really happy with it - it fits, it feels so soft, and it got lots of compliments at church LOL. People hugged me and stroked the fabric, then said, "Wow you made that?!?" followed pretty quickly by "You look amazing, by the way!"  It feels nice to have people notice my efforts!

So, sorry for the bathroom mirror selfie (laundry room, no less), but the kids were occupied when I wanted to take the pictures:

This is a little better look at the fabric and the front drape.  It can also be twisted and worn around the neck like a scarf with sleeves.  The sleeves fit perfectly, too.  I didn't have a single moment of tugging the shoulders forward.  This is awesome, because it's my first time doing sleeves this way - I've always done raglan, but these were set in.

I also did a little bit of cross stitching.  I pulled out Dorotheos (My Big Toe Designs).  This is the last progress picture I found in my gallery, so I'm pretty certain it's the last one I shared:

At some point I finished the brown border of this motif, this is what I accomplished Thursday night:

I'm out of the practice of taking pictures when I stop for the day.  But I did finish the blue flowers in this motif, and start the border of the next.  I'll have more to show next week!

My Weeks In Stitches - The Easter Sweater Continues

When you are creating over 9 inches worth of stockinette, it can be hard to gauge your actual progress. The conversation in my head goes like, "This is going to be the  rest of my life, don't measure, you'll just get discouraged, okay now you can measure, holy cow only 1/2 inch left!" Yes, at the end of Friday night I only needed to knit 6 more rows on the front drape, then 4 shoulder-shaping rows, then a joining round, then 3 or 4 rows of ribbing (depending on how it looked and how tired I was) then I would be DONE.  With the body and ready to start the sleeves.

Saturday was a stay home and clean kind of day, and normally I would have the kids clean their rooms and hide in mine and knit. But this time I actually did something about the clutter I'd accumulated  (why do I keep so many plastic bags!)  I feel a little better about the state of my space - I cleared out my reading/writing/study corner again. It has to stay this way LOL  But I still managed to make progress and by Sunday afternoon I had finished the body and everything! Sunday night I started the sleeves!

I really hope to wear this thing to church next Sunday - stay tuned!

My Weeks In Stitches

Only one project to update this time - the Easter sweater.  I'll end the suspense right away - I didn't finish in time for Easter.  I found one in a really similar color on Amazon, which had a lacy pattern, and was on sale, and available for free Prime shipping.  It arrived the Thursday before Easter!  Shoulders properly covered - and I still plan to finish this sweater because:

Look how cute!  And unique!  The long section in the front can be twisted around the neck like a scarf, too.

I had a hard time finding a pattern, until I had an e-mail from Interweave Press about magazines available for $1 - I ordered Spring and Fall 2012 of Knit.Wear (which both have beautiful patterns, and I'm really excited).  The downside was it took 10 days for the magazines to arrive.  So that left me with only 10 days before Easter.  I gave it a good go.  In 2 nights I got this far:

We had a brief power outage at work one day, and I thought maybe they would send us home, and I would get sooooo much done... and then the power came back on after about 30 minutes.  Oh well.  But that same night we had a craft night at church, so I managed to get about 4 hours of work in there:

It seemed like I got so much more accomplished that night than shows in this picture!  But at this point I'd finished the ribbing and started on the stockinette.  I worked really hard the whole next week, and managed to finish the seamless lower portion, then shape the back of the armholes and work the back up to the shoulder seam.  By the night before Easter, I'd attached a second ball of yarn and started shaping the front armholes.  But I was so happy for that back-up sweater!  It took all the stress off me, so hopefully I'll still love this one when it's done!  Here's the progress as of now - I'm working on the front drape:

My Week In Stitches

Hooray for stitching!  And actually having progress to share!

Week before last, I had 3 days off from work, so I spent part of day 1 watching Breakfast at Tiffany's (for the first time - yes, I know, many of you are shocked!) and casting on a pair of socks.  Because for some reason that's what I do when the weather gets warmer.

I've had this yarn on my desk at work for a while - I always meant to do something with it during my breaks.  But I'm not the best at taking my breaks, so the yarn just kind of sat in a mug as a decoration.  I decided it was finally time to use it, and brought it home for my very long weekend.

It makes big wide stripes!  They make me really happy - I've had so many self-striping yarns lately that made skinny stripes, that sometimes barely made it around my foot before changing colors...

You can find the pattern here, it's called Anastasia, and I really like it.  It has an intuitive pattern, so it's easy to work on while you're watching a movie.  However.  When I got to the heel, it was too tight again (just like with the cursed socks from last fall).  I think the issue is the short row heel.  I suppose I might not be making the foot section long enough, but it seems that I have a "tall" heel, which means I need some give in order to get the foot past the ankle portion.

So I pulled it out, and cast-on again.  I'm working my way back up the foot, and this time I'm going to do the heel the way I did the Uzu socks - with a gusset.  I really like the idea of the short row heel, and maybe one day I'll be able to make it work for me.  But I also want to like these socks, so I'm modifying!

I'll have to put the socks down, though, and get to work on the sweater I want to make to go with my Easter dress.  Must have a sweater, since it's a sleeveless dress and I'm helping to lead worship Easter Sunday!  Less than 2 weeks left - I'm still waiting for an older issue of a magazine to arrive that has a bunch of cardigan and shrug patterns before I can begin.

After Easter (read: after I finish this sweater) I want to get back to working on Doro Theos.  Then maybe Fairy Sisters will wake up a bit.  You never know with me!

We have one more post for National Crochet Month, and I'm really excited to share it with you - a guest post from my friend Michelle.  I think you will all really like the story she has to tell.

And I figured out how to make a signature!  There's actually a simple tutorial for CSS here - I hate doing anything with CSS, but if I can do it, then so can you (if you want to!)!

My Weeks In Stitches

The past few weeks have been almost all Christmas gifts.  They are finished and (mostly) delivered now, so I can focus on other things!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness is finished!

 I've started on Doro Theos:

The plan when I started this was to stitch Doro Theos twice - once in each of the variegated threads I got to use in Great Is Thy Faithfulness.  These colors go nicely with the color scheme in my bedroom, and I want to hang them in the chair-corner where I do my Bible reading and blogging.  However.  The chocolate variegated thread is very subtle.  And the blue-tan thread blends too well into the fabric (you can see what I mean in the "finish" pic of Great Is Thy Faithfulness).  So I think I've decided to do mixed color schemes instead of mono.  I'm also thinking about stitching each motif and framing separately (maybe in hoops not frames), so there would be 6 circles around Great Is Thy Faithfulness - here's a pic of the intended design as charted:

What would you do?  6 separate motifs, or 2 vertical sets?  I need help deciding before I finish this motif - I need to know where to start the next one!

Finally, a peek at the hibernating sweater.  The designer calls it "$5 In Paris", but I call it Parisian Berries & Cream.  I really like these colors, and I'm glad I did the charcoal stripe in between the main colors:

This seemed like a very short holiday season to me, anyone else?  It seemed like I only really had 2 weekends to get everything done, and that meant everything!  I'm glad to be done with all the busy-ness, although there was a lot of enjoyment in the busyness.  For one thing, K played Mary in the church Christmas program (I think she did an amazing job).  And I had a great time hanging out with my coworkers at our annual holiday party.

Maybe the shortness of time was because I didn't do as many handmade gifts?  Since I didn't start working on secret projects in September, I experienced the season more like "normal" people who buy things pre-made in stores?

My Week In Stitches

Progress pics!  And kids growing up too fast!

Let's start with this year's Seahawks socks (I dubbed them Volume 12, referring to the loud fanbase in Seattle - the cabled side gusset reminded me of the 12 hawk wings on the uniforms).  The original pattern, which the designer called Maeva, can be found here.  Holy Cables, Batman.  Lots and lots of little cables, and the pattern didn't seem very intuitive until I got to the leg portion.  And the cuff was very difficult.  And then I bound off and fastened off without trying on - and couldn't get the cuff past my heel.  Here I am binding it off, so excited, going to wear it...

And here's the sock after I discovered I couldn't wear it:

I gave up on this pattern.  I may try again another time, because the side gusset was really cool.  But I would 1) try on as I go (which is the point of toe-up socks anyway), 2) do a different cuff, and 3) take the time to do a stretchier bind-off.  And maybe do a solid color.  Yes, I did try to salvage the sock itself, but I swear the ribbing was difficult to figure out, and I'm not very good at picking up stitches unless it's a stockinette row.  Also, I would have had the same agony of trying to make the 2nd one, and I would have bad feelings every time I looked at them.

So now I have another one started.  But all I have is the toe, and I'm not happy with it.  I may give up (again) and finger-knit a scarf or something.

Yes!  Really!  I did a little work on "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" Friday night while H was at her first school dance.

Yes!  Really!  She turns 12 and goes to a school dance.  With her friends, because they're 12.  The theme was "Hunger Games", and I think the dress we found went with the theme pretty well:

Sorry for the dark picture, I barely got home from work before she had to leave, so I didn't even have time to turn on another lamp.  She had a fantastic time, and made some great memories!

When Silence is a Good Thing

You know that saying, "Silence is golden.  Unless you have a toddler.  Then it's very, very bad."  Or something like that.  Well, I'm definitely not a toddler, so let's say that a long absence from this blog means things are going pretty well!

I have mentally started 10 or 12 posts in the last several months, but never made it to a keyboard to get them online.  I think somewhere I have pictures of baby gift #2 (baby boy was born before Thanksgiving, and I got to hold him when he was 2 days old, and he's sweet, and his mommy loved his gifts and his daddy loved the meals I put in their freezer).  If you follow me on Instagram, you've seen my finished Legion of Boom socks (which I proudly wore to watch my Seahawks decimate the Denver Broncos!!) as well as another pair of socks I've started.  I also made myself a couple of shrugs recently.  I have no pictures of those, I really should try to get pictures of me wearing them for you.

Currently, I have another secret project going.  I've been doing a lot of knitting, and zero cross stitching.  I broke my sewing machine a few months ago while trying to hem a pair of jeans - okay, so the whole machine is probably not broken, but it's more than just the needle that's broken.  Yes, I sewed over a pin.  Yes, I continued to use the broken needle, because denim.  There's no way I'm hand-hemming denim!  But it caused more damage than just the broken needle.  I'm sure I would make a repair person very happy by bringing it for a look!  But for now it sits on the table, because I don't have time to deal with it!

Beyond my hooks and needles, church is great, work is great, the kids are great, the dog is great.  My yard is not great.  We've been in this house for almost 5 years, and I still don't have it the way I want it.  I think it's time for me to declare "I'm just not a gardener", plant flowers in containers and do my best to keep grass alive.

On a personal note, next month marks the end of the series of "one year ago today" moments I've been living through.  I think passing the one year marker on several key moments in my divorce has been a good thing.  But I'm glad they're coming to an end.  I don't want to live the rest of my life marking the passage of time based on something painful.

I'm not going to end this post by making promises to be a better blogger.  If you've stayed with me through the last 6 and a half years, you know I have long silences with bright moments in between.  I'm glad that some of you are inspired by what I write, and what I stitch.  I'm grateful for your comments and your shares over the years.  I take it as a good sign that I've had the urge to write more recently.  Schedule willing, I'll be back again...sometime......

My Weeks In Stitches - a "Sampling" of Work

Sorry for skipping out last week, I was focused on getting a baby package ready to mail.  I can't wait for the mommy-to-be to open it and see the cuteness inside!  Also, I was starting a new personal knitting project.  Don't judge me; at least there will be pictures!

Fairy Sisters - I really-really-really wanted to finish the night sky on page 3 of Fairy Sisters this month.  (I know, my goal list says both pages.  I'm ambitious at the beginning of the month.)  But you'll see that I at least set myself up with a way to measure progress - by filling in this rectangle.  The right edge of the rectangle is right about the edge of page 3:

And for the Theme-a-Licious update - Great Is Thy Faithfulness.  I'm really happy with the variegated threads, and I'm happy with my other thread choices, too.  This is going to look so pretty in my room.

And I'm "sampling" making socks.  So I had to start a new knitting project.  This green and blue yarn was totally on sale, and begging to become Seahawks-themed socks, so I work on them during games on Sundays.  And they've now won 4 straight.  (I call them Legion of Boom, it's a football reference.  The pattern is Uzu on Ravelry.)

My Week(s) In Stitches and a Theme-a-Licious Checkin

Last weekend was a Facebook SAL, and it seems weird to me to blog progress in the middle of a SAL.  So you get 2 weeks at once!

Right now my SAL piece is Fairy Sisters, which fits in with the August Theme-a-licious, too.

And not much more done.  I would really love to get back to the wings, but I'm disciplining myself to do the night sky, too.  I have to save some fun for later in these pages, right?

And just for fun, this is where I was 6 months ago:

Oh, yeah, and I did some work on Irish Blessing, too! I'm over halfway through the lettering, and I added another accent piece in yellow.  I found more of muted colors that I stashed away, and these will go nicely with what I have going on with the greeny-blue and the ecru.  I'm thinking of tweeding the yellow with a dark pink and a blue.  I'll pull out the yellow on Sunday and see how one of the "tweeds" looks instead.

(For Theme-a-licious readers - this has no wings to it.  Unless you count the flame stitches that I haven't put in yet which kind of fly. But my needle is flying through this to get this done so I can start something else...)

My Week In Stitches

It's been a very quiet week here - the kids were in Vacation Bible School every night which meant I had solid blocks of daylight evening hours for stitching!  What???

I managed to finish-finish two-thirds of the baby gift for my friend (the parts I've finished are actually their own little ensemble, the third piece will be for when babygirl is bigger).  They are so cute, when I finished today I actually put them on H's baby doll to take a picture.  I wish I could show it to you, but a secret is a secret.  Besides, my blog pushes new posts to Facebook and the mommy-to-be is one of my long time besties.  Once she's received it (baby is due in October) I can share pictures.  Just looking at the finished product makes me wish......that I knew someone else who was expecting so I could make another one.  (Not me.  I am very very happy to not be expecting in southwestern Idaho in the middle of the summer.)  Oh, wait.  I do know one family, but they're expecting a boy, and this is not a boyish type of gift.

So I was able to get a lot done on Fairy Sisters - almost all of the older sister's head.  For these 2 pages I'm left with the rest of the black on the head, 1 shade of navy blue and 2 (3?) shades of purple/silver. 

And Irish Blessing - the original plan was to stitch the words in Ecru, but it just wasn't showing up with enough impact.  If you look closely you can see toward the upper left corner an ecru triangle, and then below where the blog name has been added there's sort of an underline - imagine how faint the lettering would be if I'd left it that way!

I was trying to remember the last time I stitched something with words on it.....I'm coming up dry, guys.  It seems to me it was probably something for Tiny Treasures Exchange, which was 2 or 3 years ago.  I just don't do a lot of "message" projects, I guess!

That leads to an interesting question - what's your preference for stitching?  Images (geometric, or representing something) or letters/words?  Let me know in the comments.  I'm just being nosy. :)

Theme Stitching

How did I not know that Heather from LottLoft (I've been following her almost since I joined Twitter) is hosting Theme-a-Licious?  And this is the second year?  Thanks to Jo from Serendipitous Stitching for sharing how she "shoe-horns" to link her WIP to the theme, lol.

My Week In Stitches

Sorry I'm a little late this weekend.  I'm not one for crazy-busy Saturdays - I like to really take a day off, sleep in, get some things done around the house.  But yesterday my church hosted the annual Community Block Party, and I'd volunteered to help.  So that was a long hot day.  I also spent a good portion of the day waiting for the cell phone store to call me and tell me I could pick up my new phone!  Their computers were down in the morning, and they couldn't process purchases unless they were with cash.

So after the block party I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening playing with my new toy serious electronic device used only for communication. ;)  I'm not really into gadgets.  I had a smartphone for a little over a year, and it died tragically when I was talking on the phone to the bestie while making pizza dough.  No, I didn't drop it in the dough, but I did manage to get raw dough in the charge port.  Smartphones don't work when they can't be charged.  I got an inexpensive replacement, but it didn't even have a camera!  This one has 2!  It's nice to feel fully connected - I can get back to Instagram and tweeting more often.  And I can use Evernote on my phone again - I think I've told you before, I put my knitting and crochet patterns in Evernote, that way I don't need to carry paper patterns with me every where I go.  Love it.

Back to stitching!  I finished part of the baby gift, and I've met all my stitching goals for July!  Yay me!

Fairy Sisters - I was able to get some work done on the wings - all this shade of navy blue is done for both pages.  And I started on the black wing.  Next week I'd like to finish all the black wing and start on the big sister's hair:

Irish Blessing - the blackwork border is done.  Now I think it's time for some words!

I really need to stop photographing this in natural light - it washes out the colors.  From now on, ugly-harsh lamp light for this one!

My Week In Stitches

Thank you for all the nice comments on my posts last week.  You're all so supportive, I love the crafty blogosphere!

It's strange to think that at this time last year I was in Las Vegas with my friends, knitting poolside during the day and going out and having fun at night.

Most of what I worked on this past week was the baby gift for my friend, so there are no pictures on this.  But there's a little bit on Fairy Sisters and Irish Blessing!

Irish Blessing - I pulled this out and worked on it Tuesday night during the All-Star Game, while tweeting (I also worked on it some on Wednesday).  So if you follow me on Twitter, yes I was really stitching and tweeting at the same time.  Here's proof:

I was able to do quite a bit more of the blackwork border, and I'm glad I stayed with this moss green color - once I did the return trip it stands out quite a bit more.

Fairy Sisters - I was able to finish the edge of the moon.  I was hoping to finish all of this color, but my mom and I went to a movie Friday night, so I didn't get as much stitching time in.  But this still meets my July goal of "weekly progress"!!  All that's left of the current color is one of the wings.  I think next week will be all about wings!

Okay!  I'm off to get my hair did - I'm getting highlights for the first time ever.  I've always been a box-color girl.  But my friend has talked me into an even more updated look, so I'm going to do it!  Have a great week, and happy stitching, everyone!

My Week In Stitches

I actually had quite a bit of stitching time over the 4th of July holiday and into this week.  Again, moving that lamp has given me back my evenings!!!  And I had all day off on Friday the 5th, so I was able to have some fun with my kids on the 4th, do some productive day-time things (I painted my hallway, everyone) on the Friday, and take Saturday as a real day off.  Ahhhh.  I'm always trying to cram too many things into my weekends.  A 3-part Saturday was just what I needed!

For the holiday weekend, the Cross Stitch SAL Facebook group had our monthly SAL (normally it's the second weekend of the month)  Knowing I'd have so much time, I pulled out Fairy Sisters.  Here it is at the beginning of the weekend:

I also started knitting a baby gift for my friend April - she's expecting her first in October.  But no pictures!!!

And Irish Blessing - I haven't worked on it yet this week, but this is where I stopped in January.  I'm not sure about using the wine-dyed fabric for this.  The blackwork stitches aren't "popping" the way I thought they would.  I may have to rethink my color choices when I get to the middle section.  What do you guys think?

Back After A Very Long Hiatus

I'm sorry to say that the break I've taken has been mostly for negative personal reasons.  I'm not through all of it yet, I'm very much at the beginning still.  But I feel more able to blog about things I enjoy; there's been a time when my...filter...didn't engage properly, fortunately that's mostly been with personal friends.  But it really wasn't safe for me to write my thoughts, because I was likely to say something to the world at large that I can't take back.  And once it's on the internet...

My health is excellent, my children are well, my sweet dog is well, and we've added a beautiful fish that my younger one has named Lisa-Fish.  We think she's a she, and we think she's a Beta.  Sometimes I look at her through the bowl, and she swims AT me and makes bloop-bloop faces - I'm sure she would eat us all if she could figure out how to get out of the bowl and still breathe.  The dog does not seem that interested in the fish; it only bothers her when we talk to the bowl of water instead of paying attention to her.

I've been knitting a LOT all summer (I know that seems strange, most people work with yarn in cold weather), and I have some things to show you from those needles.  But today I'm starting work on finishing the 15-sided biscornu.  I finished all the panels in April, I think.  All my stitchy-ness has been set aside for awhile, because of knitting projects and personal preoccupation.  But today I cut the pieces apart, and I'm starting to decide how to piece them together:

Each design has a positive and a negative, so I'm deciding if I should place the matching pieces next to each other, or make one side positives with the negatives opposite on the other side, and some on the sides...

The real inspiration for this came from the Ink Circles Book of Ink Circles project.  As I played with this idea, all the other motifs just kind of came together at the same time.

I'm sorry again for the long break in posts and pictures.  I have a lot to talk about, including another vacation (girls' weekend in Vegas!) and several finishes.  I hope to catch up with all of you, as well!

Just a quick drop-in

Hello!  I hope the holidays were fantastic for all of you.  They were busy and fun here.  I just stopped in to move some things around, update finishes (yes!) and change up the side bar.  I've added a link to my Etsy shop again.  I have some things expiring soon, so be sure to go take a peek (or buy) before they come out of the shop.  Some of these things will not be relisted, but will be put aside for craft fairs next fall.  I will be back tomorrow with pictures and updates.  Did I mention I have finishes???

My Week In Stitches

A non-photo update.

Stitching this week was primarily for GhostStitchers.  This design is cutesier (Blogger says it's a word!!!) than what I usually do, but I feel like I'm making great progress, maybe even finishing ahead of deadline.  Which is always a good thing.  I did a few more rows on my sweater, but it really doesn't look any different than it did last week.

I'm looking forward to doing some more smalls soon.  I'd like to get some more finishes in.  I enjoy the bigger projects, because it's a bigger reward at the end, but there's something about finishing a project in a day or two. :)

Oh!  I almost forgot - I've reopened my Etsy shop!  I have 2 items listed right now...this might be the reason I want to do some more smalls.  Please visit!  I appreciate feedback!

Now for my recap of my year. I didn't do this last year. Blogging was hit or miss for me. But I've really found a lot of joy in it this year! And I've had a lot to show!

Finish-finishes!!!! - 3 dresses, 1 shirt, 1 little kid purse, 1 crocheted baby doll, 3 scarves, 13 tote bags with stitched pockets, 3 embroidered evening bags, 1 PIF flat-fold, 1 doggie picture, 2 scissor fobs, 2 biscornu, 1 floss tag, 1 Lizzie*Kate picture frame, 3 ornaments and one Family Tree Book. That's 39 finishes - I averaged 3 a month! I can't believe it (not all finishes are pictured)! (The Picasa mosaic idea was blatantly stolen from Theresa)

SAL, RR and WIPs - I started BoInk, I got back into doing lessons for the Hardanger tutorial and posted SAL patterns (I don't feel it's complete, and it's not finish-finished, so it's still a WIP), and participated in the 3 Ladies RR (okay, so I still have Pixie's round 6). Emma's Garden #2 is on it's way to completion - lace and beads remain. I dyed my own fabric in a mix of coffee and tea.

In blogging, I created 178 posts - that averages a little over 3 each week! Most coments were on the Blogoversary Give-Away sign-ups and my birthday. :) I learned how to create a 3-column blog page and change the background at will. My friend Laura made me a beautiful header, and I made my own for the Etsy shop and my gallery blog.

I also moved twice, sent a child off to school, and got a dog. Here's to a more sedate year #3!!

Saturday Update

Yes, I'm doing a Saturday stitching update.  2 picture updates this week.  I worked on some of the backstitches on Emma, but it really doesn't make much of a difference right now.

BoInk - more framework, I'm working my way down the right side (page 2).  I printed the other pages (did I already mention that?), so I'll be ready to start stitching in color again in a while.

3 Ladies - I now know who owns this piece!  Rebekah, it will be sent directly to you when she's done.  You can see she has more of a face now.  She needs her crown and then the last leaves on the "Tree of Life"
